I got this book because of my graduate class ...i'm getting my master's in mental health counseling. I like this book as it gives a good overview of hte major theories of counseling (CBT, REBT, Reality Therapy, Person Centered ADlerian, etc) and then discusses how to apply for children and Adolescents. Also gives input on empirical studies, family therapy and group therapy. Solid foundational book. I also like the the reference section and biblography it gives so you can buy any of hte books in the specific theoriesBy T. Fontana
This book presents the major theories (Person Centered, Adlerian, REBT, etc.) in depth. More theory is presented at the end of each chapter, where the authors provide enough references to fill the kitchen sink several times over.By Luis Maimoni
Perhaps the best parts of the book come right before those references: case studies that integrate the theories and demonstrate their applications to a child or adolescent.
But here's the rub:
Children and adolescents are lively, colorful and interesting. Presented entirely in a stunningly gray APA-esque format, this book takes the charm and fun of that group and, with some exceptions in the first chapter, replaces them with dry, intellectual, and theoretical content.
You could do worse than reading this book. But, I would have liked something more practical and engaging. If the authors had found a way to transmit experience of working with children and adolescents, so much the better.
